Serbia and Slovenia
Serbia is the main powerhouse in the region. I visited Novi Sad, Belgrade and Subotica. When you visit Belgrade you need to see the House of Flowers, Zemun and the Nikola Tesla Museum. In Slovenia, you need to visit Lake Bled and Ljubljana. This country had so much natural beauty and national parks to explore.

Kosovo
Kosovo is Europe’s newest country and does not have many physical sights, however, if you have time to spend in Prizren and Pristina it is a beautiful area to visit and learn more about.

The most memorable part of this region was the people, I met the kindest and most wonderful people when I was in this area and I would say I prefer the Balkans to Western Europe.

Bosnia and Herzegovina
This area only came out of a major war and genocide in 1995, so as safe as it is to visit, the countries are still recovering from both war and extended communism. Bosnia and Herzegovina was probably the most negatively impacted country during the war, as the majority of the population is Muslim. I also found this country to be the most beautiful overall. If you are able to, I highly recommend doing a Herzegovina region tour where you will go to Kravice waterfalls, hidden monasteries and an abandoned castle. This tour leaves from Mostar, and mine was arranged with the owner of my hostel. In the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo, you need to visit to the ‘Canned Beef’ monument and the Museum of Crimes Against Humanity, which documents the war in the region and how it affected the Bosnians.

Albania
If you visit Albania, you need to stop in Berat, Gjirokaster, Sarande, Tirana and the Blue Eye.

North Macedonia
I did not spend as much time in North Macedonia as I would like, and the capital city, Skopje is considered very different because of the weird placement of statues.
